French education overseas

The AEFE network

The Agence pour l’enseignement français à l’étranger (AEFE), an agency of the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, runs and supports a network of 540 schools in 138 countries. This network welcomes more than 365,000 students, 60% of whom are foreign students, and guarantees them access to educational and teaching excellence throughout the world. The network of French lycées abroad is unique in terms of its scale and density, as well as its unity, guaranteed by the accreditation granted and verified by the Ministry of National Education, Youth and Sports. It is one of the key players in France’s external action.

LabelFrancEducation & FLAM

The French education network abroad is complemented by two schemes, LabelFrancÉducation and FLAM.

They respond to the wide diversity of demand for education in French around the world. The development of excellent bilingual sections in foreign education systems is encouraged by the award of the LabelFrancÉducation.

In addition, the FLAM scheme (French as a mother tongue) supports the learning of our language by French children who do not attend a French educational establishment abroad.

The values of the AEFE network

The AEFE combines a public education service mission for French expatriate families with a mission to promote our language, culture and the values of French education by opening up to foreign pupils.

To this end, the Agency implements an innovative teaching policy that complies with the curricula of the French Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, while being open to the language and culture of the host country.

In its operations, the Agency relies on numerous partners who form a true school community - parents of students, former students, elected representatives of French nationals living overseas, staff representatives, and partners from French or foreign sports, educational and media institutions. They all work together for the success of all students.
